For more then 25 years, audiences have been thrilled by the exploits of Indiana Jones. The film trilogy – Raiders of the Lost Ark, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade – have received 14 Academy Award nominations, 7 Oscars and grossed an amazing $1,182,000,000 at the box office. The franchise is generally considered one of the most popular films ever made and have become a legendary part of Hollywood.
Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981)
The year is 1936 and Dr. Indiana Jones is hired by the US Government to find the Ark of the Covenant – whose superpowers according to legend, can wipe out enemies. Unfortunately for Indy, the Nazi's are also searching for the Ark of the Covenant. What follows is an edge of your seat, fast paced movie which to this day sets the standard of what an action movie should be. Released to critical and commercial acclaim in 1981, Raiders of the Lost Ark went on to gross $384 million worldwide and win four Academy Awards.
Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984)
Set as a prequal, the year is 1935. After a plane crash, Indiana Jones and his companions end up in a cursed Indian village where locals believe evil spirits have taken their children away after a sacred Shankara stone was stolen. After agreeing to help, Indy and company set off to Pankot Palace where they meet a child emperor. After surviving an assasination attempt, Indy discovers a passage leading to an underground 'Temple of Doom'. Much dark in tone to its predecessor, Temple of Doom featured themes of child slavery and cult rituals resulting in the creation of the rating catergory PG-13.
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989)
Its 1938 and Indy gets word that his father Dr. Henry Jones Sr. (played by Sean Connery) has gone missing whilst searching for the Holy Grail. Indy must retrace his fathers steps in hope of rescuing him and the Grail from the clutches of the Nazi military. The Last Crusade see's Indy's adventures taking him through Spain, West Germany, Jordan, Venice, London and New Mexico in this action packed movie. Also starring River Phoenix as the young Indiana Jones.
Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull opens on May 22 2008. Directed by Steven Spielberg, Harrison Ford returns Indy with supporting roles from Shia LaBeouf, Cate Blanchett, Ray Winstone and John Hurt.
