Im Not There |
Bob Dylan, born Robert Allen Zimmerman in 1941, has been one of the most active artists in popular music for over five decades. His self titled debut in 1962 was the first in a career that saw him release over 40 critically acclaimed albums as well as receive recognition for his songwriting, recording and extensive touring. Throughout his career Bob Dylan's records have earnt him Grammy, Golden Globe and Academy Awards in addition to being inducted in to the lucrative Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Bob Dylan defied exisiting pop music contention by often focusing his songs on political and social issues and as a result his lyrical content is often cited as the first in rock music to be considered literature. Often referred to as the greatest song writer of all time, Bob Dylan has experimented with many traditions of song, from folk, country and blues to traditional rock and roll and even English, Irish and Scottish folk music.
2007 saw the release of biographical film, I'm Not There. Directed by Tod Haynes, the movie depicts six different stages of Dylans lifes, each stage portrayed by a different actor. Released to worldwide acclaim, the film featured an ensemble of six different actors; Marcus Carl Franklin, Ben Whishaw, Heath Ledger, Christian Bale, Richard Gere and Cate Blanchett playing characters based on the legend of Bob Dylan. Tod Haynes incorporates non traditional techniques during the film with different scenes being shot in different styles. For example Richard Gere and Heath Ledger are shot in colour, the scenes featuring Christian Bale are filmed as a documentary whilst the show stealing Cate Blanchett and Ben Whishaw are in black and white.
“I'm Not There lets you hear it again, more majestically than ever.” Entertainment Weekly
“It's a feast for the eyes, the ears and the Dylanologist scratching around our minds and hearts.” Rolling Stone
